- Early Decisionin about a month
University of Michigan Early Decision application deadline
This is U-M's binding Early Decision deadline. If you apply this way and get in, you're committing to enroll and you have to withdraw your applications everywhere else, so only pick it if Michigan is genuinely your first choice. You, a parent or guardian, and your counselor all have to sign the Early Decision Agreement inside the Common App. You'll hear back by Dec. 24.
If you miss it: Miss it and you lose the ED option entirely for this cycle. You can still apply Early Action by the same Nov. 1 date or Regular Decision by Feb. 1, but you give up the guaranteed December answer.
- Early Actionin about a month
University of Michigan Early Action application deadline
Early Action is U-M's nonbinding early option, and it's the one most Michigan applicants use. You apply by Nov. 1 and get a decision by Jan. 29, but you're not locked in and you have until May 1 to decide. If you're ready to submit in the fall, there's very little reason not to take this deadline.
If you miss it: If you miss Nov. 1 you drop back to Regular Decision, which means waiting until early April for an answer instead of late January. U-M also says applicants who apply EA but miss the requirements or deadline are simply rolled into the Regular Decision pool.
- Financial aidin about 2 months
University of Michigan Early Decision financial aid deadline
If you apply Early Decision, your FAFSA and CSS Profile are due just two weeks after your application. This one catches people out, because ED is binding and you're committing before you'd normally have aid figured out. File both by Nov. 15 and your aid package arrives right after your December decision, so you actually know what Michigan will cost before you're locked in.
If you miss it: Miss Nov. 15 and you may not get an aid package alongside your ED decision, which means committing to a binding offer without knowing your cost. You could also lose consideration for U-M grants and need-based scholarships.
- Regular Decisionin about 2 months
University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance application deadline
If you're applying to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, you get a different and earlier deadline than everyone else, and you can only apply Regular Decision. SMTD does not take Early Decision or Early Action applicants. Check the SMTD site too, because these programs have audition and portfolio requirements on top of the Common App.
If you miss it: Missing Dec. 1 means you cannot apply to SMTD programs for fall 2027. The general Feb. 1 deadline does not cover you.
- Financial aidin about 3 months
University of Michigan suggested financial aid filing date
This isn't a hard cutoff, it's U-M's suggested filing date for Early Action and Regular Decision applicants. Get your FAFSA and CSS Profile in by Dec. 15 and, if you're admitted, you'll get a preliminary aid package sooner rather than waiting. That matters when you're comparing offers from several schools in the spring.
If you miss it: Nothing is forfeited, but your aid offer arrives later. You could end up making a May 1 decision with less time to compare Michigan's package against other schools.
- Depositin about 3 months
University of Michigan Early Decision enrollment deposit deadline
If you're admitted through binding Early Decision, this is when you confirm by paying your enrollment deposit. It's roughly four months earlier than the normal May 1 date, which is part of what makes ED a real commitment. Pay it through Enrollment Connect, the same portal where your decision is posted.
If you miss it: You've already made a binding commitment by applying ED, so missing this puts your place at Michigan at risk. Being admitted ED also gives you no priority for housing or orientation, so there's no upside to delaying.
- Regular Decisionin about 4 months
University of Michigan Regular Decision application deadline
This is the standard nonbinding deadline for fall 2027 entry. It buys you more time to finish essays and gather recommendations, and you won't hear back until early April. Note that the financial aid deadline of March 1 comes after this, so applying Regular Decision doesn't push your aid paperwork back.
If you miss it: Feb. 1 is the last date to apply for fall 2027 entry at all. Miss it and you're out of the cycle and would have to wait a full year or apply somewhere else.
- Financial aidin about 5 months
University of Michigan financial aid deadline for Early Action and Regular Decision
This is the real cutoff for Early Action and Regular Decision applicants. The Office of Financial Aid must have your FAFSA, your CSS Profile, and any documents they've requested from you by March 1. Note it comes a month after the Feb. 1 application deadline, so don't assume submitting your application finished the job. If your FAFSA gets rejected for a missing signature you can blow this deadline without realizing it, so check that it processed.
If you miss it: U-M says you may not be considered for all aid programs if you file later, which can mean losing out on U-M grants and need-based scholarships worth thousands a year. Filing late also risks not having an aid offer in hand by the May 1 enrollment deadline.
- CSS Profilein about 5 months
University of Michigan CSS Profile deadline
U-M requires the CSS Profile, not just the FAFSA, if you want to be considered for university grants and need-based scholarships. Use U-M's CSS code 1839. You only file it in your entering year, and if your parents are divorced or separated you'll also need to invite your noncustodial parent to complete the Household B section. The fee is waived automatically for qualifying students based on the income information you enter.
If you miss it: Skip the CSS Profile and you're only in the running for federal aid. You lose access to U-M's own institutional grants and need-based scholarships, which are usually the largest part of a Michigan aid package.
- Depositin about 7 months
University of Michigan enrollment deposit deadline
This is the national commitment date and it applies to you if you were admitted Early Action or Regular Decision. Paying the deposit reserves your seat in the class. It's also the practical reason to file your aid paperwork by the March 1 deadline, since you want your aid offer in hand before you commit.
If you miss it: Miss May 1 and you can lose your place in the entering class. Housing is another reason not to wait, since U-M assigns applications received by early May in random order and anything after that is first come, first served.
