Understand your Award Letter

What the breakdown shows, and why loans aren't a discount.

An award letter split into grants, work-study, loans, and what's left to pay.

It's important to know how much you're paying out-of-pocket and how much the school's covering.

On the Pro plan, you can upload your award/financial aid letter as a document or an image, and we'll analyze it for you.

It comes in 4 parts:

  • Grants and scholarships
  • Work-study
  • Loans
  • Out-of-pocket (you pay)

The number at the top is the total cost minus only the grants and scholarships.

Loans and work-study are not subtracted, because a loan is money you pay back with interest, while a work-study is money you earn by working on campus. Aid letters often subtract both to make the bottom line look smaller.

Before uploading, please remove or black out any Social Security number. Your documents aren't saved after it's processed, however, we take your privacy seriously so it's suggested to not share this information on our platform.
