What a scholarship priority deadline is
Most merit scholarships at a college are not separately applied for. You are considered automatically if your application arrives by the school's scholarship priority date, which is usually weeks earlier than its ordinary application deadline and is the reason those two dates are different. A few of the largest awards do have their own form and their own interview weekend, and those dates are earlier still.
If you miss one: You are admitted on the same terms but read out of the merit round, which is money awarded on your record rather than your family's finances. Nobody tells you what you missed, because the award you did not get is not something a college writes to you about.

Georgia Tech merit scholarship consideration (requires applying Early Action)
Georgia Tech has no separate scholarship application, so the way you get considered for merit money is simply by applying under an Early Action plan and meeting that plan's deadline. This covers awards like the Stamps President's Scholars Program and the Scheller Dean's Scholarship. The date shown here is the earlier of the two Early Action deadlines, so hitting it keeps you safe whichever plan applies to you. If you're a Georgia student your real deadline is October 15, and if you're outside Georgia it's November 2.
If you miss it: There's no second chance and no late scholarship form. Apply Regular Decision and you're simply not in the pool for Georgia Tech's academic and merit-based scholarships, no matter how strong your application is.

If you miss it: Applying after November 1 means you are no longer in the priority pool for UMD merit scholarships or invitations to special programs.

Foundation Fellowship scholarship deadline
The Foundation Fellowship is UGA's top undergraduate scholarship, and it has its own application separate from your admission application. You have to submit your UGA first-year application first before you can start the Fellowship application, so plan on applying Early Action by October 15 and then turning straight to this. Finalists get invited to a mandatory interview weekend in late February. UGA's general merit scholarship offers roll out from December through early April and don't need a separate application.
If you miss it: Miss November 1 and you're out of the running for UGA's most valuable scholarship package for the entire year. There is no late or backup route into the Fellowship competition.

Merit scholarship priority deadline
There's no separate scholarship form at UF, which is exactly why students miss this. Your admission application by November 1 is what puts you in the merit scholarship pool, so applying Early Action is effectively your scholarship application. Awards range from the $1,000 per year Florida Merit Scholarship up to the $10,000 per year Presidential Platinum Scholarship for in-state students. A committee picks recipients each spring and notifies them by email around mid-March.
If you miss it: Apply after November 1 and you're outside the window UF names for merit consideration, which can mean forfeiting up to $40,000 over four years with no notice that it happened. Because there's no separate application to submit late, there's also no way to fix it afterward.

To be considered for BC's Gabelli Presidential Scholars Program, its top merit award, you need your application in by November 1 no matter which decision plan you choose. There's no separate scholarship application, so simply applying by this date is what puts you in the pool. Finalists are notified in mid-January and are then flown to campus at BC's expense for interviews in mid-March. If you were planning to apply Regular Decision in January, this is a reason to submit much earlier.
If you miss it: Apply after November 1 and you're out of the running for BC's flagship merit scholarship entirely, even if you're admitted. This is a full merit award, so the cost is potentially tens of thousands of dollars per year.

That gate covers University merit scholarships, the Morrill Scholarship Program, the President's Ohio Scholarship Program and the Stamps Eminence Scholarship Program. Treat November 1 as your real deadline even if you feel ready to wait.
If you miss it: If your application arrives after November 1 you are simply not reviewed for Ohio State's University merit scholarships or its named scholarship programs, no matter how strong your file is. For an out-of-state student facing a roughly $65,000 sticker price, that is potentially tens of thousands of dollars a year gone with no appeal.

Emory Scholars is the university's merit award program, and it carries money plus academic enrichment and a cohort community. To be considered you have to submit your Common Application by November 15 and opt in, whichever decision plan you pick. Note that if you're applying Early Decision I your application is already due November 1, which is earlier. Awards aren't finalized until early April, so if a merit scholarship will decide whether you can attend, Emory itself advises applying Regular Decision rather than binding yourself early.
If you miss it: Submit after November 15 and you're out of the merit scholarship pool entirely for the year. You can still be admitted, but with need-based aid only.

If you miss it: You stay eligible for admission but drop out of the running for the Presidential Scholarship, which is worth half of tuition every year, roughly $36,000 a year at current rates.

The Presidential Scholarship is Villanova's biggest merit award, covering tuition, on-campus housing, a meal plan, the general fee, and textbooks, with 25 offered each year. You don't apply for it separately at first: every applicant who submits a complete admission application through the Common App by 11:59 PM Eastern on January 15 is considered automatically. If Villanova selects you as a candidate, you'll be invited through your Applicant Status Page in mid-January if you applied Early Action or Early Decision I, or in February for Regular Decision and Early Decision II, to submit short-answer essays. Finalists interview on campus in March.

Maryland state delegates also award scholarships to students in their district, from $200 up to about $14,000 a year. As with the senatorial scholarship, you apply through your delegate's office on their schedule, and the FAFSA (or MHEC One-App) must be filed by March 1 if the delegate asks the state to choose recipients. This one is not automatically renewed, you have to reapply to the delegate every single year.
If you miss it: Missing the delegate's application deadline or the March 1 FAFSA date means no award, and forgetting to reapply the following year silently ends the scholarship.

Every Maryland state senator hands out scholarship money to students in their district, worth between $400 and about $14,000 a year. There are two moving parts: your senator's own application, whose deadline is set by that senator's office and is different in every district, and the FAFSA (or MHEC One-App), which must be filed by March 1 if the senator lets the state office pick the winners. Look up your district's senator at mgaleg.maryland.gov and call the office to get their form and their date.
If you miss it: Missing either the senator's own deadline or the March 1 FAFSA date knocks you out of a scholarship that can be worth over $14,000 a year.
